Test of the degree of protection against solid objects and liquids

Test of the degree of protection against solid objects and liquids

The IEC/EN 60529 standard allows to indicate through the IP (Ingress Protection) rating system the degree of protection provided by the enclosures of electrical equipment against access to hazardous parts and against the penetration of solid foreign bodies and/or water.

IP (Ingress Protection) table:

Symbol 1st digit: Protection against penetration by solid foreign bodiesi 2nd digit: Protection against the penetration of liquids

IP

0 No Protection. 0 No Protection.
1 Protected against the penetration of solid foreign
bodies larger than 50 mm (hands).
1 Protected against the vertical fall of water drops.
2 Protected against the penetration of solid foreign
bodies larger than 12 mm (fingers).
2 Protected against the fall of water drops at a maximum angle of 15° to the vertical.
3 Protected against the penetration of solid foreign bodies larger than 2.5 mm (tools, cables). 3 Protected against falling rain with a maximum inclination of 60° to the vertical.
4 Protected against the penetration of solid foreign
bodies larger than 1 mm (wires).
4 Protected against water splashes coming from all directions.
5 Protected against harmful dust deposits affecting good operation. 5 Protected against jets of water coming from all directions.
6 Totally protected against dust. 6 Protected against water projections similar to sea waves.
Warning
IPX7 and IPX8 protection degrees do not include IPX5 and IPX6 protection degrees.
A double rating is applied: IP66/IP67 enclosures meet the requirements for both exposure to highenergy water jets and temporary immersion.
While enclosures IP67 are deemed suitable for temporary immersion only
7 Protected against the effects of temporary immersion in water under specified duration and pressure conditions.
8 Protected against the effects of continuous immersion inside water under defined pressure conditions.
9 Protected against high temperature and high pressure jets.
